How Dubai Gold Rates Are Calculated: Spot Peg Formulas
The definitive formula behind Dubai gold rates. Discover how international XAU/USD spot prices convert through the 3.6725 USD peg into per-gram rates.
The Foundation: International Spot Price (XAU/USD)
Gold is globally traded in US Dollars per troy ounce ($XAU/USD$). Because gold is priced internationally in USD, foreign currencies must factor in exchange rate fluctuations.
The Anchor: The UAE Dirham Peg (3.6725)
Unlike free-floating currencies such as the British Pound or Euro, the United Arab Emirates Dirham (AED) has been formally pegged to the US Dollar at an unyielding fixed rate of 1 USD = 3.6725 AED since November 1997. This eliminates currency-peg volatility between Dubai and international gold spot benchmarks.
The Official Conversion Formula for 24K Gold
To convert international spot gold into the per-gram price in UAE Dirhams, the following mathematical constants are applied:
1 Troy Ounce = 31.1034768 grams
1 USD = 3.6725 AED
24K Price (AED / gram) = (XAU_USD_per_oz ÷ 31.1034768) × 3.6725
Karat Purity Fractions
Once the base 24K per-gram rate is determined, all other retail commercial karats are mathematically derived by their exact chemical purity fractions:
- 22 Karat (91.67%): 24K Price × (22 ÷ 24)
- 21 Karat (87.50%): 24K Price × (21 ÷ 24)
- 18 Karat (75.00%): 24K Price × (18 ÷ 24)
- 14 Karat (58.33%): 24K Price × (14 ÷ 24)
Calculating Tola and Ounce Values
In traditional South Asian trade across Dubai, the tola is standardized to exactly 11.6638038 grams (or 180 troy grains):
1 Tola Price (AED) = Per-Gram Price × 11.6638038
Why Physical Shop Rates Differ: Retail Premiums
The rate derived above is the raw metal benchmark. When walking into a shop, retail jewellers add making charges (5% to 25%), retail overheads, and standard 5% UAE VAT (for finished jewellery).
